A Letter to Three Wives (1949) is based on a novel by John Klempner. His novel was entitled A Letter to Five Wives. Writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz thought the novel was too long and would be difficult to transfer to the screen. So, he shortened it to four wives and then shortened it again to three. Mankiewicz adapted the screenplay with author and screenwriter Vera Caspary (Laura).
The plot revolves around three wives who, just before going on a boat ride and picnic with some disadvantaged children, receive a letter from a society friend named Addie Ross. In the letter, Addie says she's run off with one of their husbands. While the women spend the afternoon volunteering, each looks back on her marriage and wonders if hers is the husband who ran off with Addie.

Announcing our reading selection for July
The Three Weissmanns of Westport
A Novel by Cathleen Schine
The Three Weissmanns of Westport is a delightful romp based on Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Like the Austen novel, Cathleen Schine's book focuses on the lives of two very different sisters-- the passionate Miranda and the sensible Annie. Betty, their mother, is an updated Mrs. Dashwood. She is not a widow, but rather, a woman in her twilight years who has been jilted by her 78 year old husband.
This is where the action begins. Her circumstances, now reduced, force her to leave her Upper West Side apartment for a cottage in Westport. Annie, the practical library director, moves in with her mother and sister and tries to take charge of their finances. Miranda, a literary agent now without clients after a James Frey-esque scandal, is unable to live without drama. She creates more by falling in love with an actor half her age.
The Three Weissmanns of Westport is more than a light frolic or another Jane Austen spin-off. It explores the social mores that are as much a part of our society as they were in the mid-nineteenth century. By depicting three contemporary women as they struggle with issues of love and class, we see the similarities between them and the Austen heroines. Cathleen Schine's great strength is to allow us to care about her characters in all their humanity.
This is the perfect book to take on vacation. It's wonderful character development and witty language complement a funny, and ultimately, touching plot.
Our July book discussion of The Three Wiessmann's of Westport by author Cathleen Schine will be held on the following dates:
Daytime option: Wednesday, July 21st at 10:00am
Evening option: Thursday, July 22nd at 7:00pm

Kindred Spirits: The Works of Henry Hobson Richardson and Frank Lloyd Wright
Author and scholar James F. O'Gorman to lecture on July 7, 2010 at 7:00pm
The cost of the lecture is $15 per person, $10 for museum members.
The museum is honored to host a lecture by noted scholar and author James F. O'Gorman on Thursday July 7. The lecture is the first in the museum's ongoing H. H. Richardson lecture series. In this talk, O'Gorman will explore the context in which Wright developed some of his designs by demonstrating elements of continuity between his work and Richardson's architecture.
James F. O'Gorman is a professor emeritus in the Wellesley College Department of Art and a widely acclaimed lecturer, historian, and author of numerous books on American architecture. In 1991 he published Three American Architects: Richardson, Sullivan and Wright, 1865-1915, which examined how the work of these three architects formed a continuous thread as the country struggled to create an architecture that was distinctly American and not based solely on European precedent.

Announcing our book for June
The Women by T.C. Boyle - A novel of the wives and lovers of Frank Lloyd Wright
It's a rare book that allows one the opportunity to wander through the life of an architectural genius. The Women is a detailed account of the love life of Frank Lloyd Wright, and although it is technically a novel, Mr. Boyle has taken the skeleton of a life and provided it with flesh. It has been painstakingly researched to the point where the distinction between biography and novel has been considerably blurred.
The narrator of the book is one of Wright's apprentices, Sato Tadashi, one of a crew of aspiring young architects whom Wright installed at Taliesin to assist in creating his massive and complex architectural projects. Sato is the unifying voice in this novel, although at times his voice is more prominent than at others. As the novel unfolds in reverse chronological order, his presence helps to unify the novel and establish the complex relationships.
The four women profiled, who include Wright's three wives and a mistress, are colorful personalities -- strong-willed, well-educated and ahead of their time. (The exception might be Wright's first wife, Kitty, who married him at seventeen and seemed content to keep a low profile.) The book opens with Wright's last and final wife, Olgivanna, a Russian dancer of noble parentage in her twenties, and then goes on to profile his three previous love interests. There is considerable overlap - for example, as Wright is divorcing his morphine-addicted artist wife Miriam, he is building a love nest for himself and Olgivanna. Other complicating factors include the social mores of that era, which frowned on divorce, not to mention such concepts as open marriage and living with one's mistress.
Our May book discussion of The Women by author T.C. Boyle will be held on the following dates:
Daytime option: Wednesday, June 30th at 10:00am
Evening option: Wednesday, June 30th at 7:00pm
Meeting Location: Historic Keith House (1900 S. Prairie Avenue)

Mulling over North Grant Park
Planning starts for high-profile patch downtown
The exchange that seemed to summarize the sentiments of those attending the first planning session about northeastern Grant Park came a few minutes into a presentation given by Michael Van Valkenburgh, principal at the eponymously named firm the park district hired last year to lead the effort.
In the new North Grant Park plan, Valkenburgh said Monday night, his designers may look to develop "quieter areas that are more pastoral" - a contrast, in other words, to the busier feel of Millennium Park to the west.Read complete Chicago Journal article
The Grant Park Advisory Council/Grant Park Conservancy is promising public input
Unlike Millennium Park, a great project but lacking in true public input, North Grant Park will truly engage the public. With Millennium Park, we reached out a lot to the public but the horse had already left the barn. This time the horse is comfortably eating oats in the barn.
A website has been created to provide a complementary forum for the Grant Park North redevelopment http://neweastside.org/MPtoNavyPier1.html

Announcing our book for May
Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay
Paris, July 1942: Sarah, a ten year-old girl, is brutally
arrested with her family by the French police in the
Vel' d'Hiv' roundup, but not before she locks her younger
brother in a cupboard in the family's apartment, thinking
that she will be back within a few hours.
Paris, May 2002: On Vel' d'Hiv's 60th anniversary, journalist
Julia Jarmond is asked to write an article about this black
day in France's past. Through her contemporary
investigation, she stumbles onto a trail of long-hidden family
secrets that connect her to Sarah. Julia finds herself
compelled to retrace the girl's ordeal, from that terrible term
in the Vel d'Hiv', to the camps, and beyond. As she probes into Sarah's past, she begins to question her own place in France, and to reevaluate her marriage and her life.
Tatiana de Rosnay offers us a brilliantly subtle, compelling portrait of France under occupation
and reveals the taboos and silence that surround this painful episode.
Our May book discussion of Sarah's Key by author Tatiana De Rosnay will be held on the following dates:

Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window brings all his filmmaking genius together in one film. From the opening minutes, without a word of dialogue, Hitchcock begins to tell the story of L. B. "Jeff" Jeffries (James Stewart), a temporarily wheelchair-bound photographer stuck in his apartment one summer.
With an advanced case of cabin fever due to his incapacitation, Jeff begins spying on his neighbors to help pass the time. From his New York City apartment window, he has the perfect view of all the residents in his garden apartment complex. All he observes seems to be fairly normal activity, until he suspects a certain neighbor of murdering his wife. With the help of his glamorous society girlfriend, Lisa (Grace Kelly) and his physical therapist/nurse, Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jeff tries to convince himself and his friend, Lt. Thomas Doyle (Wendell Corey) of his neighbor's guilt. Not impressed with Jeff's criminal analysis, Jeff, Lisa, and Stella continue to investigate the suspicious Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), against Doyle's advice and admonition. Will these three amateur detectives get their man, or will they fall victim to the man they suspect of murder?

Frank Lloyd Wright and the Fine Art Interior

Friends of Historic Second Church is pleased to announce the second lecture of the 2010 Evening Lecture Series:
Date: Thursday, May 6, 2010
Time: 6:00pm reception / 7:00pm lecture
Place: Second Presbyterian Church, 1936 S. Michigan Ave. Chicago, IL 60616
Cost: $5
For more into email historic2ndchurch@yahoo.com or call 800-657-0687.
In 1898, Frank Lloyd Wright opened his Oak Park studio with the intent of revolutionizing American architecture. His furniture designs and interior compositions were vital to the unified environments he created for each commission. He hired artists, sculptors, and skilled craftsmen, such as Richard Bock, Orlando Giannini, and George Mann Niedecken, to assist in achieving his vision. As a result of these collaborations, living rooms were filled with Wright's straightforward furniture mingling effortlessly with reproduction Hellenistic sculptures and vibrant contemporary murals; sunlight streamed through elaborate art glass windows to light entryways; and color and pattern could be found not only on the walls but in custom-designed rugs and fabrics. Together the overall effect led to a new era of progressive residential design.
Brian Reis, Assistant Curator at the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, will present the second lecture of Friends of Historic Second Church's 2010 Evening Lecture Series. The 2010 Evening Lecture Series has been generously funded by the Terra Foundation for American Art.

Date: Sunday, May 23
Time: 3:00pm
Tickets: $15, Seniors and Students $8
Location: Second Presbyterian Church
1936 S. Michigan Ave.
Alfonso Ponticelli and Swing Gitan
The group plays the 1930s-style music
of guitarist Django Reinhardt --
foot-tappin' swing played on acoustic
instruments. It's a blend of the jubilant
swing of early jazz with the feisty
passion of gypsy music, plus a strong
dose of guitar pyrotechnics and virtuosic
improvisation. Read more about the
band and its music. Around Chicago, Swing Gitan plays frequently a the Green Mill and Pops for Champagne. They have also played at the Chicago Cultural Center, the Field Museum, the Terra Museum of American Art, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Chicago's Summer Dance and the honor of performing at Millennium Park's opening night.

Lecture by Robert Furhoff
White House Interiors, 1865 - 1902
Tuesday May 11, 2010 at 7:00pm
East Gallery (use front entrance on Prairie Avenue)
$10 non-members, $8 members
R.S.V.P. to 312-326-1480
Robert Furhoff, a nationally recognized expert on historic interiors will guide us through the constantly changing interior of the White House during the last half of the nineteenth century. Using his extensive personal collection of stereoview images, Furhoff will discuss how the interior continued to evolve through various administrations, and how these changes reflected and influenced popular taste at the time. The lecture begins with the post-Lincoln era, the first time the interior of the White House was extensively photographed, and concludes with the McKim, Mead and White remodeling in 1902, during the administration of Theodore Roosevelt. A fascinating journey for anyone with an interest in 19th century interior design.

Sin in the Second City by Karen Abbott
THE MADAMS - They catered to everyone from
pickpockets to playboys to European royalty to
Theodore Dreiser.
THE LORDS OF THE LEVEE - They kept the
Levee district running as smoothly and profitably
as the Union Stock Yards.
THE MINISTERS- They gathered nightly in the Levee district to pray for fallen girls' souls.
THE POLITICIANS - They claimed white slavery took the lives of 60,000 girls every year.
"A detailed and intimate portrait of the Ritz of brothels, the famed Everleigh Club of turn-of-the-century Chicago, with such glamorous chambers as the Room of 1,000 Mirrors, complete with a reflective floor. And isn't Minna's advice to her resident prostitutes worthy advice for us all: "Give, but give interestingly and with mystery."'
Erik Larson, author of The Devil in the White City "Delicious... poetic... Sin in the Second City is a lush love letter to the underworld."

Ranked number forty-eight in the American Film Institute's (AFI) list of Greatest Movies of All Time in 2007.

Wabash Ave
Street
Celebration
The Wabash Avenue
streetscape and
reconstruction is done!
Come join Alderman Robert Fioretti and neighbors for a neighborhood party to enjoy local food, hear local musicians and meet your local city employees!
Daate: Monday, March 8th
Time: 11:00 a.m.
Location: Wabash & 11th
Alderman Fioretti will be hosting a street celebration on 11th and Wabash. This event is to commemorate recent changes in the neighborhood and mark the end of the Wabash Avenue streetscape and reconstruction. The Columbia College Jazz Band will be opening the event and local restaurants will be passing out food and beverages free of charge.
The South Loop has seen tremendous growth and development in the last decade. While working with the community and CDOT the Alderman felt it this important thoroughfare was brought in line with that growth and was adapted to reflect the new character of the neighborhood. This has become one of the most desirable places in the City to live, do business, go to school or work and these improvements will serve to only further that desire by attracting commerce and residents.
Alderman Fioretti would like to thank everyone in the area for their patience throughout the construction and delays and the CDOT personnel who worked so hard to make this stretch something we can be proud of. Come join us during the neighborhood party to enjoy local food, hear local musicians and meet your local city employees!

His four apartment complexes in the Gold Coast have changed over the decades, but much of Miller's work and the spirit he brought to each home remains. They offer lessons about beauty, creativity and honesty. Now, for the first time, Miller's life and the homes that he built are documented in a 400-page book by architectural historians Richard Cahan and Michael Williams, with stunning photography by Alexander Vertikoff. The book carefully details the forces that shaped an artist who was called "the blond boy Michaelangelo" in the 1920s, "a new luminary" in the 1930s, and "one of the most versatile artists in America" in the 1940s.
The illustrated lecture will shed light on "Chicago's forgotten Renaissance man" who is a legend in the Chicago architectural community. Copies of the book will be available for sale following the lecture.

Student housing tower planned
for South Loop
Condominium developer Keith Giles has turned to student
housing for his next big project in the South Loop, a
neighborhood that already has more condos than it needs.
Mr. Giles confirms that he and his partner, Jerry Karlik, plan
to build a 21-story tower that would house 860 students on
a site at 1136-40 S. Wabash Ave. The developers have
agreed to buy the roughly 20,000-square-foot property from
the city for $8 million. Though the supply of unsold condos
in the city far outpaces demand for them, Mr. Giles is
convinced that the opposite is true for student housing, a
sector that has held up despite the bad economy. About 55,000 students attend Columbia College, Roosevelt University and other downtown schools, and many observers expect that number to grow in the coming years. "We believe there's a shortage of housing," Mr. Giles says. The proposed tower, which would sit several blocks south of the Columbia, Roosevelt and DePaul University campuses, is too far off the beaten path, says Robert Bronstein, president of Scion Group LLC, a Chicago-based student housing developer and investor. The project, called the Buckingham Phase II, had been stalled in committee for months at the insistence of Ald. Robert Fioretti, whose ward includes the parcel.
